In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final on May 20, 2025, the Florida Panthers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2, taking a 1-0 series lead. Florida capitalized early, scoring three goals in the first period, which set the tone for the game. Sergei Bobrovsky was instrumental in Florida's victory, making 31 saves and consistently frustrating Carolina's offensive efforts.
Carolina struggled in multiple key areas. Defensively, they allowed Florida to dictate the pace early, and the Hurricanes were unable to recover from the 3-0 first-period deficit. Special teams were also a concern; although Carolina went 1-for-4 on the power play, they gave up a power-play goal to the Panthers. These issues contributed to Carolina’s ongoing Eastern Conference Final woes, extending their losing streak in that round to 13 games. NHL.com
Offensively, the Hurricanes did generate chances, outshooting the Panthers and sustaining some zone pressure, but they struggled to finish. Jaxon Blake scored one of Carolina’s two goals, but the team could not close the gap created by Florida’s early surge. Bobrovsky’s strong performance in net proved to be a difference-maker, stifling any potential comeback. NHL.com
To turn the series around, Carolina must address their slow starts and defensive breakdowns. A more disciplined and aggressive approach on special teams could also shift momentum. Game 2 becomes critical, as the Hurricanes look to even the series and avoid falling into a deeper hole against the reigning Stanley Cup champions.
